Coffee Pod Recycling at Abbey Road Reuse and Recycling Centre
Published: 08th October 2025
West London Waste Authority has added used coffee pods to the items collected at the Abbey Road Reuse and Recycling Centre in Brent, in partnership with Podback, the pod recycling service. Local residents can now recycle their aluminium and plastic coffee pods at the Centre.
It’s estimated that the UK population gets through about 800 million drinks pods each year, and 20% of households own a coffee machine.
All pods collected are recycled in the UK. They’re shredded to remove the coffee, then the plastic and aluminium are used to create new products, including packaging, car components and building products. The coffee grounds will be treated by anaerobic digestion to create renewable energy (biogas) and soil improver.
Used coffee, tea and hot chocolate pods can be collected and stored at home until residents are ready to take them to the Centre, where they should be emptied loose into the appropriate aluminium or plastic Podback container.
Backed by the UK's leading coffee pod systems
Podback is a not-for-profit recycling service, created and funded by the UK’s leading coffee pod systems - NESCAFE Dolce Gusto, Tassimo and Nespresso, and over 25 coffee pod brands and national retailers.
Welcoming the introduction of the new pod recycling collections Dan Green, Circular Economy Delivery Manager commented:
“We are really excited to be working with Podback to introduce another recycling stream at our Recycling Centres. Coffee drinkers can now enjoy their coffee knowing their used pods can be recycled here in the UK. The aluminium and plastic are turned into new products like drink cans and car parts, while the coffee grounds are transformed into renewable energy and soil improver. At West London Waste Authority, we are always looking for innovative ways to respond to the climate emergency. Every step helps, and this partnership gives residents a simple way to take action.”
Podback Executive Director Rick Hindley said:
“It’s great to be able to expand the Podback service to Abbey Road Reuse & Recycling Centre. We want to make coffee pod recycling as easy as possible, and this new service enables residents to drop off pods when convenient, alongside other recyclables, and helping to reduce waste and increase recycling.”
