Waste Week 2017
On average in the UK we buy three new electrical items every year. Unfortunately, only a small number of the unwanted or broken items end up being recycled. We want to encourage recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) so we’re taking part in The Pod‘s Waste Week again this year.
Waste Week aims to educate young people and their families to choose a more sustainable lifestyle by reducing their waste. This year, the week is from 6 – 10th March. Primary schools across west London will be able to sign-up to host free WEEE collections. By signing up, a school will be automatically entered for the chance to win a prize worth £500!
What is Waste Week?
Waste Week is a UK wide week-long school campaign around recycling run by EDF Energy’s education programme, The Pod. This year’s focus is on upcycling and getting everyone to think differently about waste.
Primary schools in Brent, Ealing, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow and Richmond can sign-up to host a free WEEE collection during Waste Week. Students will be provided with bags to take home, fill up with WEEE and bring back to school. We’ll collect the bags afterwards, weigh them and then send them on for recycling. We accept all small WEEE – that is anything with a plug, battery or charger, for collection.
By running a WEEE collection during Waste Week schools will enter a competition for the chance to win a prize worth £50o. Prizes include sports and science equipment, an environmental workshop or a Wastebuster bundle including school membership. The school that collects the most WEEE by weight per pupil will win the prize. If you can’t join in for the whole week then why not take part in Use Less Stuff Day on 9th March!
