Turn Black Friday into Buy Nothing Day
The holidays are fast approaching and so is the infamous Black Friday! Once a 24-hour deep discount sale, Black Friday now seems to stretch on with deals already advertised on shopping websites and across London High Streets. Don’t be too quick to jump at the supposed rock bottom bargains however, as recent research conducted by Which? shows the deals may not live up to all the hype. According to Which?, “Shoppers might be surprised to learn that only half of Black Friday deals are actually cheapest on Black Friday.”
Rather than get stuck waiting in queues for not-so-great deals, we want to challenge you to try something new. Turn this Black Friday into Buy Nothing Day. We know it may sound tough, but with a few tips from us we’re sure you’ll enjoy a crowd-free, money-saving, sustainable day – or your money back!
How to Eat on Nothing
If buying nothing sounds like a challenge to your belly, your freezer may be your best friend. Did you know there’s £860 million worth of food sitting in UK freezers, or enough to feed ourselves for 11 days just with the food in the freezer! Have a look in yours to see for yourself.
Once you’ve decided what you’d like to take out for your Friday meals pair it all together with items you have in your store cupboard. We typically have a stock of ‘store cupboard staples’, things that we always have ‘just in case’ as they’re used in lots of recipes. If you need further inspiration, check out Love Food Hate Waste’s recipe section where you can search for delicious recipes by what you want to eat!
How to Shop for Free
Perhaps you may still feel that urge to make some headway on your Chirstmas shopping this week. There are lots of ways to satisfy that urge without spending anything! You could come to one of our upcoming swishes for example. All you need to do is clear out your closet and bring in the clothes you no longer wear to swap for something you or a loved-one will enjoy. They’re loads of fun and a great way to clear out closet space.
Don’t forget about fabulous websites that offer up items for free as well! Perhaps the perfect gift is already out there just waiting for you to come and collect it. Have a look on Freecycle, Freegle or the free-section on GumTree. The fabulous food sharing app Olio recently launched a new section for non-food items too. Items range from desks to cloth nappies – all for free!
To make Black Friday a bit cheerier, there are also a number of fun campaigns running this week. Traid’s #SecondHandFirst week celebrates the power of second-hand to change the world by keeping the resources we already have in use for longer. While Hubbub’s alternative to Black Friday, #BrightFriday, encourages us to resist the urge to buy things we don’t need and to focus on the things we already own and love instead.
Happy Buy Nothing Day!
