Love Your Clothes London
Last month we teamed up with the Recycle for London and Love Your Clothes campaign ‘Love Your Clothes London’ to bring west London residents a series of clothing repair workshops. The workshops were a smashing success thanks to you – our residents – for coming out and participating!
Workshops were held in each of our 6 boroughs and taught by master crafter Barley Massey who runs Fabrications, an independent gallery, shop and studio dedicated to contemporary textile practise and design with a special focus on upcycling and eco-design. Barley showed us simple techniques, tips and tricks to repair and alter clothes to make sure we get the most out of them.
Interest in the workshops was strong in the lead up to them, but nothing compared to the enthusiasm we found at the workshops on the day. At the beginning of each session participants introduced themselves, explained their sewing backgrounds and discussed what they wanted out of the session. Barley was able to tailor each workshop so participants could work on what they wanted with encouragement and help – whatever their level of sewing skills
In a Love Your Clothes blog post by our Waste Minimisation Officer Emma, she describes the sessions as “filled with people chatting about the sewing and life in general. It was so lovely to see people exchange their skills and admire one another’s work. It was also interesting to listen to conversations about why these skills were important and how it’s a shame they had been lost. This wasn’t just a sewing course: this was a community event.”
We’re so pleased the workshops proved valuable to participants, both for the skills they gained and for the sense of community they instilled. As one participant noted:
The tutors are very helpful and there is a good atmosphere, a community feel where students help one another.
Another participant added:
These workshops are important for the community. There used to be one and it was full and popular. They really do benefit the community.
Not only did the workshops highlight the demand for sewing skill workshops, but for skill sharing community groups in general. Overall the workshops were a great success, with high attendance and amazing feedback, as attendees had all learnt some valuable repair skills to bring home and hopefully share with others!
