10 Ideas to Make Your Waste Less Resolution Stick
New Year’s resolutions can be hard to stick to. From losing weight to eating more healthily, traditional resolutions often come with big ambitious that require lots of time and commitment. For 2017 why not try something different and make a resolution to throw less in your rubbish bin. We have 10 ideas that are quite simple and have little to no cost attached. Choose one idea to start with then once you’ve conquered that one then pick another then another… This way you can start the new year off with small wins to help keep you committed all year long!
10 Waste Reducing Ideas for 2017
1. Just say no to single-use plastic bags
We all know that single use carrier bags are bad for the environment, especially when people don’t take care and allow them to escape in to the local area where they get caught in trees, fences, waterways and generally create litter. It can be hard to say no to checkout staff but start taking a re-usable bag with you everywhere you go and say no to plastic bags in the shops.
2. Make a shopping list
Shopping lists are a great way to save time and money in the shops. Just remember to stick to it and not to leave it at home! We have a helpful meal planner so you can plan meals in advance and base your list on this. If you’re less of a planner, why not keep a tally of what you need on your phone so you’ll have it handy whenever you pop into the shop. The Love Food Hate Waste app is brilliant for this and has lots of other smart shopping ideas.
3. Get re-acquainted with your recycling box
Sometimes our busy pace of life prevents us from recycling as well as we’d like. From food waste to paper, your local council will surely recycle a number of items. You can use this app to find out what can be recycled in your area. Then dust off that old recycling bin or log on to your local council’s website to order a new one so you can easily recycle from home.
4. Love your ingredients
Don’t think of your leftovers after dinner as food that no one wants, but as ingredients for another meal or free lunch for the next day. Save what you don’t eat in containers in the fridge. Look here for recipe inspiration for commonly leftover foods.
5. Check out our washable nappy pack
Washable nappies are great for the environment, but can seem like a large undertaking. Seize the new year by trying something new! We have a free nappy trial pack for all our west London residents to borrow. We’ll help you every step of the way so by the time you’re finished with the trial you’ll be confident and ready to use washable nappies on your little one.
6. Clear your closet and get swishing
Swishing is an easy way to update your wardrobe – guilt free! Swishing works like a giant clothes swap: you bring items you no longer wear and exchange them for something new-to-you. Our next swish is on 14 January at Hounslow Library from 11:30-1:30. Join us!
7. Bring your unused electronics to one of our collection events
Has your drill died? Is your printer in pieces? The New Year is an ideal time to clear away those old, broken and unfixable electrical items that you’ve been hoarding in your cupboards and drawers at home. We’ll be hosting week-long WEEE collection events across west London in January and February. Have a look at our events section to find out when we’ll be near you.
8. Try a new app
The past year saw a rise in waste reducing apps, making it easier than ever to give away items you no longer want instead of chucking them in your bin. You can find apps for nearly everything from food – try Olio or Too Good To Go – to general home goods on apps like Freecycle and Freegle. Give one a try!
9. Browse a local charity or reuse shop
Charity and reuse shops offer unique items at a fraction of their original price. They carry all kinds of things from clothes and furniture to children’s toys and books. Why not have a browse next time you need to go shopping, you might be surprised at what you can find.
10. Have WLWA come to you
Are you a member of a group that would like to learn something new or do something completely different? We love coming to give talks about recycling and waste reduction. We are also happy to host Swishing events, WEEE collections and other waste reducing activities. Have a look here to find out what we can offer you and than get in touch!
